the unstoppable ink flow.

the man with the golden black pen has been rabidly busy since we last checked in. mr. jonpaulkaiser has taken great strides with his simple color palette, while being completely true to his style. every new piece is a little more refined and a lot more awesome. especially now that he's popped his cherry on some serious pieces of vinyl. there's no room for timid hands when you take a marker to a jaws/paws sculpt. there are few people i would trust with that freedom, and jpk is high on the list.

wrestles with the pain & fury.
i'll see your bald head and raise you a mustache.
huzzah!

he once killed three men and a horse with a single bitch slap.

panda murdering demon boy.
what's with all the giant hands?
don't look him in the eye or he'll turn your pants to shit.

perfectly demented and yet
can't find evil gloves or evil boots to save his life.

roasted by solo.
the only bounty hunter with eyes like a my little pony.

and the han still stands.
the empire will let in any ole nerfherder these days.
[silently wishing there were real stormtroopers]

boba. with trophy krayt dragon skull.
...moments after he escaped the sarlacc.
smelling strongly of gamorrean ball sweat.

ram-man and a tiny spartan hoplite.
helmets for he-man and hera.

warrior pandaimyo.
must have fallen asleep with his coffee mug on this chest.

artist spotlight: [ jason freeny ]

we all have guts on the inside. some of us have guts on the outside. [zombies] and thanks to the magic hand of jason freeny, we get to see both. for the past few months, i've been following his incredible sculpts, but never got around to posting them. then the jaws build started appearing... my god is it amazing. jason's smooth, defined style perfectly complements the coarse aesthetic.

but what's really amazing is the amount of work that he puts in to every detail. it's a wicked combination of skill and dedication that makes his pieces so jaw dropping. [npi] i love that his clay is raw. with no paint to hide his mistakes, anything less than perfection would be horribly distracting. he's also clearly got a keen eye for anatomy. there aren't exactly reference books lying around that focus on carebear skeletons. dude's amazing, simple as that.

50% skinned and still standing. and now the shark's a hat.
victory goes to noop.

eviscerated. then viscerated?

we can rebuild him. we have the technology.

teach your children about anatomy. and night terrors!

you can catch all of his new builds here. because he's cool like that.
so cool that he made this video of the magic behind the curtain. rock on.

five gees.

$5000

you have five thousand dollars to spend. [obviously this is bullshit, but play along] would you invest in a handcrafted, one of ten, 1:3 scale resin accident victim from coarse? possibly. the piece is a nice step forward for mark and sven. everyone loves more blood and bandages right? the prone "pain in dreams" is just one of an emergency room full of maladies from the glimpse of truth show that's currently showing at rotofugi. the guys must have been working nonstop because there is a shit ton of new stuff.

should've never challenged nolte to a screwdriver fight.

this life support diet makes these abs look tiiiiight.

or there's option #2. [yes, the piece above really costs 5000 american dollars]
ricardo de montreuil took $5000 and created an amazing little dystopian short film. he shot for exactly one weekend to create the raven, and now he's in talks with universal to make it a feature.

so what's it gonna be? a kick-ass piece for your shelf? or commission mr. de montreuil to create a sweet five minute movie with you as the ass-kicking star? [pretty sure he'd never do this]

this isn't really a legit question because there are billions of other things you could spend the money on, most of which are less ridiculous than these. but you see my point. hell, if you're gonna get a toy with your money, at least get something huge like a 4ft dissected or an entire platoon of 1:1 squares.

addendum: let's leave the question as a discussion of two wildly disparate endeavors. it was hasty to write off a piece like the one above without thinking about how much intimate work goes into something that complex. when something has that level of finish, it's easy to forget the hands that brought it to be.

shark shark attack.

well that's the end of jaws. he was either attacked by another shark man, or fell into an industrial garbage disposal, or was ambushed by a band of chipmunks with katanas, or doesn't know how to use nail clippers, or fell in love with a weed whip, or swam less than 30 minutes after eating, or... i could do this all day.

motorbot has put the finishing touches on his custom coarsetoys pain jaws and it's ridiculous. he tore this guy to shreds; buckets of blood, teeth marks, eye gouge, bruises, shredded skin, exposed bones. i don't think this was a fair fight. he's truly in pain now, although the glare stays stoic.

he's all out of hello kitty band-aids...

war can change a man.

one minute he's nervously sitting in the chopper as it hovers over the flaming battlefield, the next he's emerging from the jungle weeks later wearing a shark's skull made from the blown barrel of a tank he took down with his bare hands.
eyes glazed over, heart lost somewhere in the fight and down to the last pack of smokes; yeah, you could call him changed.

holy shit. a custom jaws from the hand of dril one. like a rusty nail in the sole of your foot, slowly leaching tetanus up to your heart; you can't just walk this one off. he nailed it, i mean drilled it, i mean... fuck it, it just fucking rules. the mangled metal, endless rivets, ninja face mask... the addition of pants!
this is how it's done kids.

this is who rambo has nightmares about.

why you got so many nipples?
[famous last words before your brain exploded on the wall]

must have taken a bunker buster to get through that pec...

giants of vinyl. 2.

giants second class is ready for graduation. once again we pay tribute to the artists that love to get fiberglass threads buried in the fingers and fill their heads with toxic plastic fumes. we've gone even bigger this time around, reaching ridiculous heights and girths. and both in some cases... #bramble# #cough#

the starting team [left to right]
elizabeth by kathie olivas : qee by toy2r : smokestack by mars-1
jaws by coarsetoys : manute bol as himself : daft punk bearbricks
dissected by kaws : bramble by ashley wood : van orlax and snorse by pete fowler
mc supersized by ron english : helper by tim biskup
zliks by andrew bell : grin by ron english

click it. it gets bigger.

this is the stage of addiction where sadness reigns supreme. sadness because we don't have thousands of extra dollars to blow on sweet shit like giant robots. but there's light at the end of the tunnel... most of these killer behemoths come in shelf size. let's explore.

inkslinger by kathie olivas and brandt peters
pic from vinylpulse
it was a tossup between inky and pinky as to who would appear in the giant lineup. pinky got the nod, so inky gets the breakout love. both were recently for sale at the incredible shared show. which means some lucky child gets to cry themselves to sleep every night while staring at those big noggins. for shelf size, you can always substitute the beautiful hazel...

formerly blank qee by jonpaulkaiser
pic from jon
since there may only be one giant blank qee, i got to choose a killer custom to showcase. this snarling dog with creepy man hands works perfectly. he can let himself outside and still piss on your tires.

smokestack by mars-1
pic from smokebelch
and we've got our first true miniaturized version. this tiny by comparison poison factory hails from the invisible plan series. creepy old man face is pretty much standard. the big daddy is from the nuclear mystic show at the jonathan levine gallery last year.

jaws by coarsetoys
pic from tetedelard
ah, the desolate noop. so emo. so shirtless. the giant fiberglass version was the crown jewel of the noop show at rotofugi, which rocked. basically coarse teased all of their coolest shit almost two years ago, and now they're slowly producing a chosen few. the big guy was a one off, but you can own one of the eleventy different flavors of regular sized jaws, which are not tiny by any means. you can not however own the completely awesome "it hurts" version... yet.

manute bol
pic from hsupreme
made the list because he looks completely impossible.
plus you can't beat a bol/muggsy combo pic.

daft punk bearbricks by toy2r
pic from eric..
the big ones rule because of the helmets. but the little ones have those adorable bear ears... either way da funk will rock your face off. so shiny! i'm admittedly not a big bearbrick guy, but i'd sell a toe for the 1000% duo. (with nail polish)

dissected by kaws
pic from kush images
the alpha and the omega. everyone loves dissected, especially awash in 90s dayglo. the midgets routinely fetch a g in the aftermarket. the big one is a steal at about 4-5 times that. both more than most can pay for some divinely sculpted guts. this goes on the lottery list.

bramble by ashley wood
pic from twobags
oh bramble. how i love thee. the key to my lock. the icing to my cake. the heroin to my addict. you can't begin to understand the level of cool until you hold one in your hand. or in the case of the 1:1; hold its hand. i'm lucky enough to own one of the big little guys, and maybe someday i'll get close enough to just sniff the giant, but probably not. he will continue to tease me from across the interwebs. and i'm ok with that.

van orlax by pete fowler
pic from s2ok
just a horny little bastard with opposable toes. there are no little van orlaxi running around. which is a shame because he looks like he'd be a responsible father. on second thought, he does look a little high... and his hands are buried in the eye sockets of a skull... and that might be leprosy on his face... but other than that... totally responsible.

snorse by pete fowler
pic from expectmohr
the nosy steed takes flight! snorse just flat out rules. this little dude showed up in the blind box monsterism series 3, along with a ton of other classics... fun fact: for the longest time i thought his nostrils were eyes.

mc supersized by ron english
pic from vtss vince
as american as crocs and elastic waist pants, mc supersized smiles lovingly at your exponentially expanding waistline. the sick little bastard knows what makes you drool. give him what he wants.

helper by tim biskup
ah, the classic helper: like a cross between bender and a rancid hotdog. just as happy to help you off a cliff as across the street. the super giant version towers over your insecurities and still manages to tickle your soul. he looks so intense, but maybe he's just really in need of eye drops.

zliks by andrew bell
pic from joe marinaro
attention all zlik owners! the government has ordered that all zliks be released back into the gulf of mexico to eat their way through some sort of oil spill. probably no big deal, they should be back by dinner.

grin by ron english
pic from **shifty**
charlie may look cute, but he's got a devil inside just like everyone else. his just happens to be working its way out. keep stretching that skin skully, you'll be strangling lucy before you know it.

so there you go. the second round of giants already released to do their worst on the wallets of you and i. there's just too much talent floating around, which is good. the wanting is what makes it fun. so it's back to the lottery tickets. someday...

here's the original giants post for more big love.

class pic again by me, the mastodon. created with images stolen from these fine chaps. qee. smokestack. jaws. manute. daft punk. bramble. van orlax. snorse. mc supersized. helper. zlik.

the losers revolt.

what the shit?
jaws: tigerbeat edition.

someone's been pocketing highlighters from the office again...

these are not fake. coarsetoys is set to release their loser edition of jaws on friday. two versions: the pink shark (blush) is limited to 50 pieces and the white is limited to 100. pink is friends and family only and comes with a signed print. white comes with a f&f code card. both are the same price: HK$2300. both come with the same swim trunks i had in 1990. but i suppose the neons are in again.

i actually really like the white-hatted chap. and the pink has it's own merits. however, i think coarse stretched themselves a little thin with the colorways on jaws. i understand the business involved, but it seems like the pixie version maybe could've been eliminated. perhaps give them the exclusive on the pink version of loser instead. not that it really matters as i'm sure these will be gone in seconds. you can read up on the full details here.

puff the magic dragon, died by the sea.

the warrior awoke 'neath the glow of mount gorgallath. the lava flow warmed his armor and cauterized his wounds. his battle was not yet complete; and today would be long. but his wrath was longer. one skull already protected his own, and showed to the world that he was a draillian slayer. by nightfall he would have two more to adorn the walls of his garrison. he sheathed his fabled sword and the hunt was on. somewhere in the distance an electric guitar wailed.

following in the footsteps of his creation, f+ displayed a lot of bravery being one of the first to customize a coarsetoys jaws. a fair share of paws have been sacrificed for the cause, but rebirthing a jaws is on another level. the pressure guided him well, because the results are spectacular.

possessed entrails for breakfast give your eyes
just the right amount of demonic glow.

the armored mask attaches with magnets in the ears... brilliant.
never go into battle without a breatheright strip.
or you know... you won't be able to kill shit.

you should see his finishing move.

and he's rockin the original steel shell toes.
the kind perfect for slashing spinal cords.

f+ has been quite impressive of late. his order of the arcane show at red hot robot in november really opened a few eyes as to what he's capable of. which is why we are now treated to mind-bending pieces like the slayer. i'm sure there are quite a few eyes peeled for what's next from the plus. a lot of the arcane pieces are still available in his shop, although i doubt they'll stay there long. and if you're really interested, he's mentioned he's open to more commissions...

frank.

the false friends are here to terrorize your neighborhood. coarsetoys will release them on december 10th for 24 hours and then officially in january. it's noop and paw totally krossed out. only 200 of the tag team will live in milky bliss.

grrr.

once again, with some of the greatest packaging for anything. period.
really digging the bunny suit.
paw's t-bone body? not so much.
where'd the superhero physique go?

they do have pretty killer glares though.

not sold separately. to my dismay.

13" tall and only $4,400 hong kong dollars.
don't convert that. it'll make you sad.

i want this variant/custom. it just makes too much sense.
grey up that bunny suit, give him an attachable mask.
and turn paw into a demon. sold.

the new noop head rocks. as does the paw head. and if you could swap them back and forth i would be all over it. but as it stands, incredible packaging and one of two figures floating my boat isn't enough for me. this time.

there will undoubtedly be other colors. possibly even the ashley wood 3A / coarsetoys collaboration built on this platform. so stay tuned.

sentinels.

two months ago i covered the giants of vinyl. tiny little man-sized toys in comparison to these super-behemoths. it's a battle of the asias to see who can build the biggest fucking robot possible, with the south koreans going for the gold. watch for kim jong to try and sweep the leg of their ungodly large taekwon v.

but first up is the 59ft gundam. he lives lived in tokyo until the end of august. even more sweet pics of him here.

59ft of robogasm.

he will beat up your christmas tree.

japanese kids are lucky little bastards. it's got lights and smoke!
i had a robot once with lights and smoke,
he couldn't take down a chipmunk.

the 60ft tall tetsujin. also in japan. this time in kobe... mmmm beef.
he goes on permanent display this month.
a giant kinder egg with judo chop skills. sweet.

defender of your apartment complex parking lot!

tetsujin x pixie x coarsetoys paw x much cooler than tetsujin

the 364ft taekwon v at robot land south korea. ho.ly. shit. do you realize how big that is? that's like 4 at-ats stacked on top of each other, with another legless dachshund at-at on top. megahuge. being built now, and set to open in 2012. coincidentally the year the world is supposed to end... maybe it's because of this guy.
the statue of liberty can suck it.
this is the statue of win.

he even dominates toy trains.

our last giant robot is of course the king of pop. this is only a 30 footer, but the mad genius had plans for a desert-wandering 50 foot nightmare. sounds like a burning man massacre to me.

sculpted back when he was still human.

patiently waiting for someone to build him a giant astro boy companion.

with the exception of mr. jackson, i love that these monsters are real. they have incredible power. not just to destroy planets and large attacking spacecraft, but to put the future back up on the pedestal where it belongs. people are cynical as ever about the state of the world, myself included. it's things like this that bring back a little awe and excitement, especially for kids. this is crucially important. kids (and adults) need to be inspired. to think that anything is possible.
this is the future we want. we may not have flying cars and jetpacks,
but we do have giant ass robots.
