artist spotlight: [ jason freeny ]

we all have guts on the inside. some of us have guts on the outside. [zombies] and thanks to the magic hand of jason freeny, we get to see both. for the past few months, i've been following his incredible sculpts, but never got around to posting them. then the jaws build started appearing... my god is it amazing. jason's smooth, defined style perfectly complements the coarse aesthetic.

but what's really amazing is the amount of work that he puts in to every detail. it's a wicked combination of skill and dedication that makes his pieces so jaw dropping. [npi] i love that his clay is raw. with no paint to hide his mistakes, anything less than perfection would be horribly distracting. he's also clearly got a keen eye for anatomy. there aren't exactly reference books lying around that focus on carebear skeletons. dude's amazing, simple as that.

50% skinned and still standing. and now the shark's a hat.
victory goes to noop.

eviscerated. then viscerated?

we can rebuild him. we have the technology.

teach your children about anatomy. and night terrors!

you can catch all of his new builds here. because he's cool like that.
so cool that he made this video of the magic behind the curtain. rock on.

artist spotlight: [ scott radke ]

enter through the ear. bore a little hole in the eardrum. crawl down the tunnel and chip away at the bone. shovel out a little wet cave of brain. climb in, curl up and plug yourself in. we're going deep and you'll want to be comfortable. this is the part of your mind where you keep the fear. the part that can only be looked at through a mirror.
the medusa section that will turn you to stone if you scrape too hard. secrets live here.

scott radke creates some of the most incredible creatures. all slightly dark. all toeing the line between real and nightmare. all slowly digging their claws into your spine for the sweet juices. these are creatures that stick with you, whether you want them to or not.

muriel had always dreamed of being a mother.
but she also had quite a hunger for omelettes.

her raw delicate fingers couldn't crack the shell.
so she sat on it and started planning the nursery.

feeling the bass thudding in their guts,
the brothers nervously shuffled out onto the dance floor.
...middle school was gonna rule.

although he'd never seen the ocean, mort bled seawater.
and so margot begrudgingly drew on his 'tats' every morning
with a pen.

ann destroyed the lawn. she had eaten every bit of grass she could
find to try and become a woodland faerie.
she was now going to destroy the bathroom.

the imp's reflection continued to spawn his clones.
he was nearly a plague.
he had to get the fuck out of this fun house.

greta loved philip, but his block collection was driving them apart.
she decided to gut him in his sleep.
she hated therapists.

mark split his personality into anthropomorphic sections,
hoping it would isolate his mental anguish.
the split worked, but he was now stuck
caring for a depressed squid and a schizophrenic moose.

exhausted from mounting the orphan's head on her wall,
lucinda got dressed and went out to be caught by the sartorialist.

content with his place on the wall,
greg prayed daily for sudafed.

narnia suddenly grew dark and cold.
the child kings were out for blood...
pulled by the herd of skin kittens.

these make me happy and inspired.
and jealous of all the lucky people who already own one.
just incredible work.

you can follow his latest here on his blog.

artist spotlight: [ scribe ]

scribe's an insanely talented graff artist from barbeque town. (kc) the cartoon mind explosion of his work is just nonstop. every inch is blasted with character, emotion and life. stepping inside this man's imagination must be like riding on the tilt-a-whirl until you puke, and then eating a shitload of cotton candy.

one of his latest carnival attractions is what really caught my eye. johnny booker the munny cop is just a brilliantly done character. the fluffy mustache, unbuttoned shirt, the gnawed on cigar and that crunchy donut just work. he's equal parts strung-out and tough as nails.

he must buy eyedrops by the case.
look at that corneal shine.

5 bucks says my mop smells better than his stache.

stitch gets superfied.
drunk on cheese wine and ready to rumble.
who let red sauce here off his chain? dumb.

ledbetter smashed
our national bird lost his legs in a brutal fight.
but you should see the economy...

horselington gets rhinoed
tell me you don't love a grimacing sword.

since the man started with billion color walls,
i thought it important that you get a taste.
wild hare phil.
the deadliest and only hamster assasin.

i didn't know lemmy made honey.

available for parties...
bunny ass blasters.

have you guys heard the new animal collective?
...change your life. i swear. no really. where you going? guys?

ahhh, puberty.

you can keep up with some of scribe's work on his infrequently updated site here. and on his more frequently updated site here. but don't bother trying to catch em all. he's basically a machine. pay your two tickets, sit back and enjoy the ride.

lost in the woods of michigan.

64colors of sharp crisp crayons on a friday afternoon. could anything else be better? 64colors is actually a talented duo from here in the great white north, although i'm guessing their name is an allusion to the big box of 64. laura and eric had a big year with the release of marshall mashumaro; fathered by the terrific triumvirate of squibbles ink, rotofugi and 64colors.

the wilderness wünderkids are quite talented character designers and as evidenced below, pretty handy with a paintbrush. their most recent conquest was 20" of mega munny.

porcelain face and a maple-hard ass.

flaming monkey horns. i like the sound of that.

not content to leave mischievous marshall alone, 64colors has started customizing and selling the little nugget. some are still available in their shop.

the river runts
half vampire gourd, half booger.

marshall monsters
this is why lucha libres wear masks.

stumps.
you can count their rings to see how many children they've mauled.

stay tuned as i'm sure they'll continue to blow minds this year with even more hidden creatures and woodgrained midgets.

shroomin.

am i drunk or is that possessed bunny rocking a giant snail shell?
...on a mushroom. that's what i thought. i am drunk.

created by storybook-named martin wittfooth, aesop's folly is soon to be released by newbies big spoon toys, in two colorways for a grand total of 500 creepy bunnies. there are also 3 handpainted versions still available from the 'a cry for help' show at thinkspace. the show also has a huge pile of other bitchin work available from artists you know and love.

i must say, it's nice to see some texture and originality leaking back into vinyl. there's been too much of a push into uber-simplistic diy platforms recently. i want to see some existing artists' work be brought to 3d, and martin's fits the bill nicely.

fur and slime wouldn't seem to mix well.
evil fur and evil slime however mix perfectly.

to give you a better grasp of the wittfooth world, i've very generously stolen some of his work from his site to show you. dig in.

saints preserve us
my ass. my ass. my ass is on fiyah.

when i run out of poop, i'm throwing this bomb.
fair warning.

no jekyll.

just hyde.
usually content to explode some color on a wall, hyde has dipped his toes into the vinyl world. and naturally, he killed it. you can see the years of work he's put in to get his shit as tight as possible. the layering of patterns and the kaleidoscope of color will literally freeze you in your tracks.

my gamorrean uncle pauly.
this my train.

munny skull > real skull.
that is hard to do.
tenochtitlan here has some skills.

perhaps he was sacrificed on an incan temple in a previous life.
perhaps he's just a visionary.

these dudes get all the hottest skeleton girls in hell.

popping up for the random custom show isn't going to be enough to satisfy the drooling hordes once his work gets a little airtime. i hope you're ready for the onslaught. follow his flickr for the latest.

the remnants.

the second one with a soundtrack... scroll to the bottom of the post.
hit play on the youtubes and then come back up here for maximum experience.

when things have been lost. forgotten. buried in the blood of the past. that's when they come out. not to rule, but simply to exist. for when what you see is all that you get, survival is no longer a given. there is work to be done and only a few with the tools to shoulder it.
these are the remnants.

eyes to the sky no longer necessary.
the dirt is all that pulses now.

the seeker feels all. including your fear.

treasures of a factory torn open.
the war stole lives but now outfits the survivors.

can love exist when all else has died?

the sweeper provides.

each scar becomes proof, of another day alive.

cobbled together from the glowing mind of makadi3000, seeker and sweeper reach a different world of customization. the level of detail and life in these two is really staggering. matted fur, the hint of blue on the shoulder. i'm just floored by how awesome these are. they don't belong on a shelf, they need to be free, wandering the wasteland of siberia or stalking the back streets of bucharest. my hat's off to you sir. well done.

triple dutch.

dutch master of awesome, collin van der sluijs is rocking the canals with his incredible painterly customs. these are not your normal quickie jobs. incredible depth and color with multiple story lines gracing every inch. i'm blown away. plus he picks excellent canvases.

sug surrealism
this is the cat who keeps leaving hairs in my mouth while i sleep.
creepy little bastard.

ka-fucking-pow.

knuckle bear
cloudy with a chance of delusions.

darth vader
lord vader's an avatar?

i want to get lost in these little wonderlands. who wants to go to amsterdam? stop in a cafe, maybe check out his other amazing pieces like this...

rockets, risk board, hotdogs, robots and fucking tanks?
fijne verjaardag!

collin's flickr of fun.
