the man with the ~~golden~~ black pen has been rabidly busy since we last checked in. mr. jonpaulkaiser has taken great strides with his simple color palette, while being completely true to his style. every new piece is a little more refined and a lot more awesome. especially now that he's popped his cherry on some serious pieces of vinyl. there's no room for timid hands when you take a marker to a jaws/paws sculpt. there are few people i would trust with that freedom, and jpk is high on the list.

we all have guts on the inside. some of us have guts on the outside. [zombies] and thanks to the magic hand of jason freeny, we get to see both. for the past few months, i've been following his incredible sculpts, but never got around to posting them. then the jaws build started appearing... my god is it amazing. jason's smooth, defined style perfectly complements the coarse aesthetic.

but what's really amazing is the amount of work that he puts in to every detail. it's a wicked combination of skill and dedication that makes his pieces so jaw dropping. [npi] i love that his clay is raw. with no paint to hide his mistakes, anything less than perfection would be horribly distracting. he's also clearly got a keen eye for anatomy. there aren't exactly reference books lying around that focus on carebear skeletons. dude's amazing, simple as that.

50% skinned and still standing. and now the shark's a hat.

there is something wonderfully disturbing about the extreme disregard for anatomy in an anatomical set of nesting dolls. hands clasped in grief over her lack of clothes and a pelvic bone. at least i'm hoping it's a she. always the possibility of a tucked native american gent suffering from testosterone withdrawal. i bet s/he works at the dmv, where his/er coworkers adore her/is savant-like recall of patron saints and his/er ability to eat ritz by the case.

well that didn't take long. you leave a handful of fish eggs in a bucket of beaver urine on your back porch and the next thing you know the muscamoots are mating. overnight, your entire property is covered with glassy-eyed inbred disease ponies.

holed up in his island laboratory, dr. ryniak has been bending the laws of genetics to create his bitey little scumsuckers. he's pulled out all the stops for his latest show, "this could get ugly" currently at my plastic heart in nyc. i'm completely floored with the character and emotion he's able to cram into these tiny little dudes. (are there lady-moots?) his sculpting skills are just disgustingly good, and of course he's already established himself as a painting machine. seeing his all of his skills come together is just beautiful.

the red-gilled muscatoad subsists solely on calluses and caterpillars.

ricardo de montreuil took $5000 and created an amazing little dystopian short film. he shot for exactly one weekend to create the raven, and now he's in talks with universal to make it a feature.

so what's it gonna be? a kick-ass piece for your shelf? or commission mr. de montreuil to create a sweet five minute movie with you as the ass-kicking star? [pretty sure he'd never do this]

this isn't really a legit question because there are billions of other things you could spend the money on, most of which are less ridiculous than these. but you see my point. hell, if you're gonna get a toy with your money, at least get something huge like a 4ft dissected or an entire platoon of 1:1 squares.

addendum: let's leave the question as a discussion of two wildly disparate endeavors. it was hasty to write off a piece like the one above without thinking about how much intimate work goes into something that complex. when something has that level of finish, it's easy to forget the hands that brought it to be.

leaked and congealed from the mind of mr. brent nolasco, "a fond farewell" is a total mindfuck of a creature. with at least eight different vinyl abominations melded together, along with other found objects, this thing has the presence of an alien god from the fourth dimension. it also marks the conclusion of his fusion sculpts. all 3d adventures that brent takes from here on will evolve from his own artwork. which is fine by me, because his art is even more mental and awesome. i can't wait to see what escapes from his studio next.

there are two types of collectors. two groups of people, separated by an ocean of ideals. one that few ever have the strength or the care to cross. those who play with their toys, and those who don't. there are warriors among both sides determined to sway their disillusioned brothers. ah, the desolate noop. so emo. so shirtless. the giant fiberglass version was the crown jewel of the noop show at rotofugi, which rocked. basically coarse teased all of their coolest shit almost two years ago, and now they're slowly producing a chosen few. the big guy was a one off, but you can own one of the eleventy different flavors of regular sized jaws, which are not tiny by any means. you can not however own the completely awesome "it hurts" version... yet.

the crown jewel of nikejerk's recent show: a single mega hammer brother. mega indeed. hammer bros were the original punk ass kids if you didn't know... seriously, hammers? hammers fucking hurt. hammer bros were also my favorite baddie from the mario worlds. and so i find it appropriate that he is the most kick ass piece from chomping at the bit. he was also sold at the show, which makes me happy. he deserves a good home and a backpack full of hammers and maybe a fat man to throw the hammers at.

why wouldn't mario just chuck a plumber's wrench in retaliation?

right now there is a portal, cut by a subtle knife, between two worlds. two worlds which are not ours, but instead are sandwiched between. the portal is here at gallery 1988. they only have the technology to hold the connection for another week or two, so you have to hurry if you want a glimpse. in one world lives the supercouple, kathie olivas and brandt peters. and in the other world... magic. they must have a private portal in their basement or something, because they both continue to kidnap incredible creatures from the other side.

there were a few new faces debuting at the show. all of which are pretty amazing. lizzie and junior standing 25.5" high. a few elizabeths at a massive 36". and a bunch of customs of brandts latest the skelve.

the brooklyn brothers have busted through the 8-bit wall into a crazy show by jared cain [nikejerk]. it's called chomping at the bit and it opens tonight at ultra pop. jared whipped up about 50 different pieces in 5 weeks for this thing, all of which rock. i'm amazed he's still conscious. as always, his style is instantly recognizable and lends itself brilliantly to the iconic faces. these guys are like family. we've all obviously spent enough time with them, and it's nice to see them get some love back.

something a little different today: legos. they're these little plastic bricks with nubs on them that fit together without the magic of glue! vinyl addicts step back, this is pure ABS plastic baby. only the good stuff. these bricks can be formed into tens, maybe even hundreds of different combinations. and if you're lucky, your combination will look like something.

these are all the work of angus maclane [cubedude]. he's created hundreds of different characters from things that you probably like. i'd seen one or two before, but i'd never gone in head first. this man is amazing. and he has excellent taste of subject matter. check out his flickr stream, you will not be disappointed.

someone's been pocketing highlighters from the office again...

these are not fake. coarsetoys is set to release their loser edition of jaws on friday. two versions: the pink shark (blush) is limited to 50 pieces and the white is limited to 100. pink is friends and family only and comes with a signed print. white comes with a f&f code card. both are the same price: HK$2300. both come with the same swim trunks i had in 1990. but i suppose the neons are in again.

i actually really like the white-hatted chap. and the pink has it's own merits. however, i think coarse stretched themselves a little thin with the colorways on jaws. i understand the business involved, but it seems like the pixie version maybe could've been eliminated. perhaps give them the exclusive on the pink version of loser instead. not that it really matters as i'm sure these will be gone in seconds. you can read up on the full details here.

when i was a kid, i was obsessed with colors. especially combos of colors. every time a new combo became popular [teal & purple...]

i thought that it was the coolest pairing you could ever have, and that it would always look awesome. clearly that was grade school logic,

but my love for colors never stopped. the same thing happened with neons, even more so when matched with black.

i had a killer skateboard with a neon pirate on the bottom that i thought was the raddest thing ever. too bad i didn't think actually riding it was rad too. nevertheless, neons and the funky ass 80s color combos take me back.

cpassak from gangtoyz gave me a childhood bitchslap this morning when i stumbled on to his wicked creations. electric blue skin, gnarly teeth and exposed skeletons... somebody find my checkerboard vans... where's my hang ten gear? the frenchman has some serious talent and he's clearly not afraid to use it. if i ever make it back to france, you're getting a high-five.
